| 520 | 3 | |a The compulsion to quickly change technologies, continuously shortening product life cycles, the acceleration of product development processes, customers’ increasing expectations regarding price, quality and services pose ever more difficult challenges on organisations in the keen market competition of our days. The importance of research and development is growing, expenditures on research, development and innovation (R&D&I) are increasing – yet, this can accompany an increase in the unintended negative impacts of the results of innovation. For this reason, the concept of “responsible innovation” has by now become a key focus point in the European Union. Controlling functions and tools must also be adapted to these challenges. The widespread application of controlling tools and methodology is becoming natural in nearly all companies. Consequently, it is also natural that companies willing to gain long-lasting competitive advantages that come from different sources need state-of-the-art R&D&I controlling to support their R&D&I activities. The importance and necessity of R&D&I controlling are, therefore, indisputable in our days. This study will try to identify the reasons for the growing importance of the two current megatrends, R&D&I and responsible innovation. It will review the information content of R&D&I related costs and expenditures and the possibilities of their management in a decision supporting system, attempt to define the key components of R&D&I controlling and try to position one of these components, the concept of responsible research and innovation. | |
