Summary:Nagybecskerek was the capital of Torontál county. In the view of population Nagybecskerek – in 1910 – was the second city after Nagykikinda in Torontál county. The data on the population of Nagybecskerek in the past are hidden in the documents of various contents, because censuses were not. The first census was conducted soon after withdrawal of the Turks, in 1717. Before and under the rule of Ottoman Turks the Serbian population immigrated here. After the Turks withdrew, in the 18th century, the Spanish, German and Hungarian population settled in. In the 19th century the most important ethnical groups were the Hungarians, the Serbs and the Germans. The second part of the 19th century brought the town new developing benefits. New industrial firms and handicraft stores were opened in every part of the town. Late 19th and early 20th century was progressive period for Nagybecskerek.
