The clergy fell into a secular part, the members of which belonged to the parish of the town, and monks and nuns who lived in monastaries and convents. There appeared the social structure of the clergy, as well as that of the citizens. The religious life of the population took place in the parishes, but since the appearance of the medicant orders like the Dominicans, the Franciscans and Carmelites, the monks took part in it as well. The citizens were glad to make their second and third child priests and monks establishing foundations for them. In spite of their collaboration the clergy was exempt from taxes and had their own rights living in the town with fiscal immunity. The citizens regularly tried to cancel this. They enjoyed privilegium fori and right of asylum thanks to the immunity of the clerical buildings and had different forms in each town. | |
