A determining period in his political career is examined in this study. Bocskai was promoted to the rank of captain-in-chief at Várad by his nephew, Zsigmond Báthory, the young Transylvanian prince (1588-1597, 1598-1599, 1601-1602). Due to this appointment in 1592, he became the second in dignity and power. Besides conducting the local affairs of Várad, he directed the military and political affairs as well. In his correspondence two distinct parts can be separated. Those documents pertaining to Várad, can be dominantly related to economy, while the correspondents of Bocskai were mainly officials in Várad. The other part of the correspondence can be connected to the military and political activity of Bocskai, who conducted these official affairs of the Transylvanian Principality. It can be started, that Bocskai had a large network of spies, by whom he was wellinformed about the events of the Fifteen Years'War (1593-1606) between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empire in Hungary.
