Presumably, the reason is that everyone tried to choose the most appropriate knife for their own needs and tastes. Even though their typologization is therefore difficult, yet it can be said that they preferred multipurpose, small knives. The knives’ placement within the grave gives a firm basis to decide what custom is the reason behind their entombment. This could have happened in a profane – so the knife was considered an item for everyday use-, and in a superstitious manner – the apotropaic role attributed to the sharp iron object-, depending on which manner was expedient for the deceased in his afterlife. The superstitious manner – placing the knife to the region of the head, chest or in some cases of the ankle – can be observed in women’s and children’s graves. In the case of these knives, buried in this special way we can suspect whether they can be acknowledged as the antecedent of the custom, which lived on until the 19th century and considered the sharp iron object as means of protection against ill- wisher (witches and evil eye) for mothers and children. | |
