Sedimentology of Sinjar Limestone Formation, Sulaimanian area, Northeastern Iraq

Sinjar Limestone Formation of Eocene age is composed of allochthonous and autochthonous limestones. Petrographic and geochemical characteristics of the rocks of this Formation show the occurrence of phosphatic rocks in two horizons which are separated by 43 feet thick nonphosphatic limestone beds. Petrographic and geochemical characteristics of the rocks of this Formation show the occurrence of phosphatic rocks in two horizons which are separated by 43 feet thick nonphosphatic limestone beds. The study also reveals that the phosphatic rocks are recycled sedimentary deposits from the near-by source. No effects of phosphatization was observed in the associated rocks. Five phases of sedimentation representing different physicochemical controls have been established on the basis of petrography, chemistry and the fossils present in them.
