Description
Summary:This paper examines the habits of language use of the young adults in the bidialectal community in Mindszent with the help of two questionnaires, in order to get to know the speakers’ attitudes that have a great influence on how long the regional dialect will survive in the community. Mindszent is a small town about 50 kilometers north of Szeged. The regional dialect spoken in the language community, according to Juhász (2003: 278), belongs to the Southern - Great Plains type of regional dialects, but in the last decades of the 20th century, standard Hungarian began to appear as a second dialect in the speech community, and has been used in more and more communicative situations since then. The use of two dialects has lead to a bidialectal situation in the speech community. The young adults (aged 25-35) are well aware that they are bidialectal, i.e. they use the two dialects according to the communicative situation, so the questionnaire survey method is used as an appropriate tool to study their habits of language use. In the present paper I discuss two surveys: the first one examines the target age group’s language attitudes and whether they intentionally influence the language use of their children. These questionnaires were filled out by the parents of the children going to the local nursery school, who are of very varied educational backgrounds, so this questionnaire had to be short and simple. The second survey aims at studying the attitudes of the bidialectal speakers towards their own language use and the regional dialect used in Mindszent. This questionnaire is more detailed and also examines if the speakers are aware of the change of the language use in their town. These questionnaires were filled out by speakers who can use the two dialects of the contact situation separately. The result of the questionnaire studies reveals that bidialectal speakers have greater language awareness than monodialectal speakers, and that the bidialectal contact situation has lead to the functional suppression of the regional dialect. However, the surveys also show that the covert prestige of the latter dialect is very strong, and, hopefully, will help the regional variety to survive.
